You may be asking yourself “why in the world would she name her blog, “Mother of Pearl It Is?!”
Well, I will tell you…..no, I don’t sell jewelry as I was asked when I purchased my custom domain name, and although I am a huge fan of the sea, I am not on a mission to hit up some poor mollusks for their precious “Mother of Pearl.” 
It all began many years ago when our eldest child, Matt, was about 8-9 years old. One day, out of the blue, he called me “Mother of Pearl.” I asked him why he said that, and he told me, “because you’re my mom, and you are white (my children are biracial) and beautiful like a pearl.” Awwww…..well, I never really cared for the name “Pearl,” but somehow it stuck, and he still calls me that to this day at the age of 21. Only now, it’s just “Pearl” for short.
So, what exactly is “Mother of Pearl?” Well, I decided to research it a bit…I knew that it was some sort of unique, precious material commonly used in jewelry, but to my surprise, the description actually describes a mother to a tee!! This is the description that I found…….
Two substances actually combine to create “mother of pearl.” The first is plates of aragonite, a material which is secreted by the mollusk. Aragonite contains calcium carbonate and conchiolin, a natural protein. Alone, the plates are very hard, but also very brittle. As a result, the organism also secretes organic material similar to silk to layer between the plates. The result is “a strong, flexible material which can withstand hard use.”
What could describe a mother any better?! Moms can usually withstand ANYTHING that is thrown at them. They are extremely strong even after they’ve been dragged through the dirt. And will usually come out smelling like a rose!! I believe my son hit it right on the nose when he gave me the nickname of “Mother of Pearl.”
