New Year, New Furniture

Around this time last year, our oldest son, daughter-in-law, and granddaughters moved from our 5-bedroom apartment to their own place. It was a bittersweet moment — sad to see them "leave the nest," but happy to have the extra added space. Especially for our other 4 children .. which meant they would each have their own bedroom now!

Furniture is not something we come by easily. Being that we are a low to middle income family, we have to plan for months.. sometimes years to purchase large-ticket items. Our youngest daughter, Brianna, was the only one of our children without a "real" bed. She had very little furniture in her room once her big sister moved across the hall. Her bed was a "hand-me-down" and in desperate need of being replaced.

The hubby and I decided to surprise Brianna with brand new bunkbeds for Christmas this year! We saved for several months, and all the while.. searched sites for modern children's furniture that was both durable and attractive. We finally located the perfect ones – a dark cherry wood set featuring steps and built-in drawers on the side.

Brianna's favorite color is pink (just like her mama), so the dark cherry wood blends perfectly with those tones. I like that she has 4 extra drawers at the foot of the bed built into the steps — perfect for storing her night clothes, socks, and other essentials. If I have one complaint, it's that I had forgotten how hard it is to change the bedding on the top bunk. :)

As you can see from the photos, her bedroom is in desperate need of some GLAM! Like many others, we tend to do most of our "heavy-duty shopping" when tax refund season rolls around in February, so we've been checking out stores and online sites for cute children's bedding, throw pillows, rugs, as well as, other furnishings to compliment the bunkbeds. Her dresser is actually rather quaint and in good condition, so I may end up doing a "DIY" … sanding it down, staining and varnishing it myself.

Since we live in an apartment, we are not permitted to use colored paint on the walls — and white is well.. a bit boring. So, we're looking into kids wallpaper and wall decals to pull together the look we want to achieve. Brianna also received a Disney Princess "erase board top" table and chair set, and a Hello Kitty alarm clock for Christmas, so we will probably look into one of those themes or something similar. I know she has her eye on an awesome pink shaggy fur rug for the center of her room — and of course, adorable pink accented curtains or shades to match!

I'll be sure to do an update post in the next month or so, and share photos of Brianna's bedroom makeover. :)
