I've decided to "blow the dust off" the Supahstah Saturday feature, and will be bringing you a new interview with a fab blogger each week! Great way to find new blogs to read, get tips on making your own blog successful and fun, and to show your support for bloggers everywhere! This week's interviewee is coming over from Woven by Words. Meet Mimi, a hard-working mama to 4 kiddos.. two boys and two girls, one of which will be graduating college this year! Mimi is an "outdoorsy" type that loves gardening, football and baseball, and thinks nothing of jumping about on the trampoline with her children. She also loves chatting and twitter parties, so be sure to connect with her @MimiBakerMN.
Q1: Please tell us a little about yourself, your family, your job, and/or your interests when you're not blogging.
A: I'm a single mom of four kids. My oldest daughter will be, gulp, 21 this year. She's also graduating from college. My 2nd daughter is going to school for Linguistics! She amazes me. I have a son in 7th grade and a son in 3rd grade. Where does the time go? How has life passed by so quickly? I work part time at a large Midwest hardware store IN the hardware department. Yes, I love power tools and I know how to use them! I also enjoy chats and parties on Twitter. I'm a gardener of perennials and vegetables. I also love baseball and football. Even won my first venture into Fantasy Football this year! Woo Hoo
Q2: When and how did you start blogging, and how did you decide on your blog name?
A: I started blogging when one of my favorite Christian authors, Julie Lessman, told me someone was giving away one of her books on their website. I wanted to find out how someone did that!! Get free books to read and give them away? I was ALL over it! I spent about a year and a half doing book reviews & giveaways when I moved into product reviews and sharing more "me" posts.I came up with my blog name by sitting at the computer and staring at the blog page. Woven by Words just fell out of the sky. I've considered changing it, but have been encouraged to keep it because it doesn't have to only have a meaning for books. Words speak into our lives. I love words, so it's still fitting.
Q3: Are there any topics/products you are passionate about on your blog? On the same note, are there any topics/products that you try to avoid blogging about?
A: Wow, I wish there were something I was passionate about when it came to blogging. It might make blogging a LOT easier! I don't have any particular topics I blog about regularly. My blog is like me. You never know what to expect. I have ADD and I think it reflects in my blogging. =) I tell people I'm nicheless.
You won't find me blogging about anything political or any hot button issues. I'm not opposed to it and never say never, but I've never ventured into those discussions. I think if I did, I'd have to be ready for a backlash, because I'm pretty strong with my thoughts and opinions.
Q4: What do you personally look for in the blogs that you visit? What would keep you from returning to a blog?
A: I love bloggers who are quirky and very REAL about who they are. I like clean blogs, you know… ones that don't make you dizzy when you visit their site? I typically won't go back to sites that have a lot of swearing in them. If there's music that automatically turns on, I'm outta there! That makes me nutty!
Q5: Do you have any favorite blogging networks/groups that you visit often?
A: I love several blogging networks like Social Fabric, Mom It Forward and The Motherhood. I'm part of a couple of wonderful Facebook groups of blogger, too, and have some really great online friends now because of them.
Q6: Would you share some of your favorite blogging tools, plugins, etc. that you use to make your blogging experience easier?
A: Wow, I use Blogger, so I don't have any real "tools" and definitely no plug-ins. I'm so clueless about that kind of stuff. I have to pay someone else to do anything technical to my blog. I do enjoy using LiveWriter to write my posts. It's easy to use and add "stuff" to my posts. I also use a free download of Photoscape for editing photos. I love free things!
Q7: Where do you do your best blogging, and how do you come up with fresh ideas for your topics?
A: I do my best blogging when I'm in the moment. When I'm feeling "it". Sometimes ideas just come pouring out of my head, and I have to capture them at THAT moment or it just doesn't come out the same later. I come up with fresh ideas just by living life. I wish I had a plethora of ideas just written down, so I could just look at that when I need ideas. Sadly, I don't.
Q8: What is the most exciting thing that has happened to you because of your blog?
A: Oh, I haven't had any recognition, but I've been able to meet some actors and have Q&A time with them in a small setting. That's really amazing! I interviewed Julianne Hough and Kenny Wormald for Footloose before the movie came out!
Q9: Do you have any favorite posts and/or reviews from your blog that you'd like to share?
A: I'm excited to be co-hosting my first blogging event over the 4th of July called the Made in America Event! We're going to focus on products made in the good ol' US of A! I'm also getting ready to work on some remodeling projects. I have a 2 part blog post coming up of redoing my counters! I did a post showing the before! And one of the more recent actor interviews was Chaske Spencer from Twilight.
Q10: What advice you would give to a blogger just starting out?
A: Get connected. Find other bloggers who blog about the same thing you do and start commenting on their sites, be involved with those who "fit" you. Don't get discouraged. So many people are blogging these days. Find your voice and be confident in it! The blogosphere is your just as much as the next blogger's!
Q11: If you could have anyone, living or dead, write a guest post on your blog, who would you choose and why?
A: Wow, I've never thought of who I want to guest post for me. I think maybe having Billy Graham post would be pretty cool. I mean, there's always the go-to of Jesus, but that would've been an easy one. =)
Q12: And lastly…in the next few years, do you see yourself still blogging, and if so, what would you try to improve on or add to your blog routine?
A: Not sure if I still see myself blogging. It's not an easy thing. It can be very discouraging at times. I hope I am, we'll just have to see where life takes me. I'd like to improve on my daily writing. Not doing product reviews or giveaways, but to just talk about whatever I want. I want my blog to be more conversational with others, to draw them into discussion.
